The fruit for our Reserve Pinot Noir was all grown on our Jacksons Road vineyard. Several different Pinot clones were utilised to add complexity; including clones 10/ 5, 114, 115, 667 and 777. The oldest vines are 20 years old. After a perfect growing season the grapes all ripened beautifully and were handpicked over several days in early April as each clone attained optimum ripeness. Only perfectly ripe and clean bunches were selected by the pickers. The average yield was approximately 7 tonnes per hectare.
The bunches were destemmed and the fruit was cold soaked for up to five days, before being hand plunged in open top fermenters. While our whole Pinot harvest was maturing in barrel we regularly tasted every barrel to determine which ones showed the most promise. We eventually settled on our best six barrels, which tended to be newer barrels and tended to contain fruit from our best blocks. These barrels were set aside and kept full after our other Pinot had been bottled. This wine eventually ended up spending almost 15 months in oak, a significant portion new oak, before being bottled during July 2012.
It is a deep cherry red, auburn in colour with a delightfully rich and compelling nose which displays an abundance of ripe red fruits, cherries, plums, and darker berry fruits, but also increasingly complex characters including herbs and spices, with lashings of vanilla. On the palate it is rich and spicy and very appealing. There are chocolate notes as well as cherries, dark fruits, spices and developing savoury hints, which all contribute to the silky smooth mouth-feel. This is a beautifully textured wine with fine grained tannins, refined acid balance and appealing complexity. It lingers beautifully and leaves a very elegant, refined impression. It will continue to develop for many years to come and should gain even greater complexity.

“Pale ruby colored and scented of freshly crushed raspberries, cranberries and a hint of powdered cinnamon, the medium-bodied 2011 Reserve Pinot Noir is a little dilute on the palate though is nonetheless well balanced with soft tannins and acid through the medium to long finish. Drink it now to 2015.”
