Riverby Chardonnay 2009
  •  Riverby Estate Chardonnay 2012

    • Riverby Estate's Chardonnay block was planted in 1989, making it one of the oldest Chardonnay blocks in Marlborough and one of the few still on its own roots. It is also one of the few exclusively planted with the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay; Mendoza having long been recognised as the premium New Zealand chardonnay clone.
The 2012 vintage in Marlborough presented us with perfect Chardonnay fruit. After careful handling the wine was 100% fermented and aged in French oak. During almost 12 months in oak, 25% new, it underwent regular lees stirring to produce the desired mealy characters. Just over half of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. It was bottled in late March 2013 and not released in New Zealand until early 2015 as we like to give our Chardonnays plenty of time in bottle before release.
Mid burnished gold in colour, it has powerful, toasted caramel aromas with notes of citrus, vanilla, poached stone-fruits; apricots and peaches. On the palate it has a lovely creamy, mealy character with appealing rich, grainy textural notes, and hints of cashews. This is a beautifully balanced wine with great acidity, a creamy satisfying mouth-feel and a sense of still to be unleashed power. It lingers beautifully with rich creamy characters citrus and peach notes most obvious.

      • "An elegant expression, the delicately fragrant bouquet shows white peach, citrus and oatmeal with a hint of vanillin oak characters. It's focused and finely textured on the palate, and finishes beautifully long and linear. A lovely cool climate chardonnay showing harmony and poise, this should develop gracefully. At its best: now to 2018."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit June 2014

"Bright, golden-yellow colour with lemon-green hues. This has a full and softly packed bouquet of white stonefruits and chalky minerals complexed by layers of nutty barrel-ferment and mealy lees elements, smoky, toasty oak and oxidative nuances. The aromatic build in depth and concentration with aeration. Medium-full bodied, fulsome and bold flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits form a complex amalgam with mealy and nutty oak, and toasty and buttery layers that unfold in waves. The palate has concentration and plenty of dry texture and underlying power, with good acidity and cut for freshness. The extract, body and grip carries through to a strong, robust and linear finish. This is a concentrated and powerful Chardonnay with plenty of structure and complex flavours of citrus fruits, nuts and toasty oak. Serve with roasted pork dishes over the next 4-5 years. 18.0/20 "
Raymond Chan Wine Reviews March 2015

"Bright yellow/green, it is mouthfilling, with concentrated, citrusy, slightly peachy and buttery flavours, finely balanced oak, and good texture and richness. It's drinking well now. ****"
        Michael Cooper 2014

"Lemon, lime and orange citrus fruits. Vanillan oak with a touch of spice. Fresh and bracing on opening but this opens up and develops fatness, with oatmeal biscuit coming through. Citrus comes through again on the finish. Quite a complex wine in a finer-boned style. Excellent"

The 2011 vintage presented us with some of the best fruit we have ever seen off this block. After careful handling the wine was 100% fermented and aged in French oak. During almost 12 months in oak, 25% new, it underwent regular lees stirring to produce the desired mealy characters. Just over half of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. It was bottled in late March 2012 and released in New Zealand in late 2013.
Pale gold in colour, it has a powerful but elegant aroma of peachy stone-fruit with traces of nectarine and citrus, and a lovely creamy, vanilla element. The palate is redolent with peaches, citrus fruits, cashew nuts and a delightful mealy, baguetty character. It is a mouth-filling powerful wine, beautifully textured, with bright, well balanced, acidity, restrained alcohol and an attractive clean, crisp finish, which lingers for some considerable time in the mouth. It is going to continue developing and improving for many years along similar lines to previous vintages of this wine.

      • "A real charmer, the fragrant bouquet shows peach, mango, oatmeal and vanillin oak characters. It's beautifully ripe and textured on the palate with excellent weight and a lengthy, creamy finish. The wine is generous and sumptuous while remaining elegant and beautifully poised. Made from 23-year-old vines, the wine was fermented and matured in oak barrels (25% new) for 12 months. At its best: now to 2018. ***** 94/100"
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit May 2013

"The 2011 Chardonnay is scented of guava, honeydew melon and peach blossoms with a touch of yeasty / toastiness. Medium to full bodied, it has a nice suggestion of creaminess to the texture and plenty of tropical and stone fruit plus some oak in the mouth, finishing long with a refreshing lift. 89/100 "
        Lisa Perotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 2012

"Bright straw-yellow colour with green-gold hues, lighter on rim. The bouquet is light and even, the fruit tightly bound, showing soft citrus and mealy, biscuit notes harmoniously intermixed with subtle barrel notes, butterscotch MLF, and a flinty lees component that grows in the glass. Medium-bodied, restrained flavours of citrus fruits, mealy notes and nuts are complexed by flinty elements. Lively and bright acidity enhances the fruit freshness and richness, bringing a vitality and energy to the mouthfeel. There is a fine textural line that guides the palate to a lingering, dry finish. This is a tightly bound, elegant Chardonnay with a complex citrus and flinty lees amalgam and freshness. It should increase in richness over the next 4-5+ years. Serve with seafood and poultry. "
        Michael Cooper Dec 2013

"Full-bodied, with generous, citrusy flavours, slightly toasty and buttery, finely integrated oak and excellent complexity and length, it's a youthful wine, well worth cellaring."
        Raymond Chan, May 2013

  •  Riverby Estate Chardonnay 2010

    • Riverby Estate's Chardonnay block was planted in 1989, making it one of the oldest Chardonnay blocks in Marlborough and one of the few still on its own roots. It is also one of the few exclusively planted with the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay; Mendoza having long been recognised as the premium New Zealand chardonnay clone.
The 2010 vintage produced one of the lowest yields ever off this block at less than 5 tonnes to the hectare. It was also some of the most pristine fruit we have ever harvested. After careful handling the wine was 100% fermented and aged in French oak. During its 11 months in oak, 30% new, it underwent regular lees stirring to produce the desired mealy characters. Just over half of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. It was bottled in late March 2011 and released in June 2012.
Pale gold in colour, the aroma is creamy and rich, with hints of vanilla, bright peachy stonefruit, pineapple and banana. It is immediately obvious that this is a smooth, complex wine with attractive baguetty characters already and hints of continuing integration and unfolding refinement.
The attractive aromatics lead on to a palate redolent with nectarine, pineapple, peaches and citrus fruits. This full bodied wine also has particularly appealing butterscotch hints and is quite mealy with a lovely grainy texture. It has well balanced acidity, restrained alcohol and an attractive long lingering finish. This refined and elegant wine promises to gain even greater complexity and charm with careful aging and should easily reward cellaring until 2016 and beyond.

"A really nice, nectarine-laden chardonnay with attractive stonefruit, grapefruit pith and toasty flavours to top off a lovely, lean, textural mouthfeel.  Just the thing for a bowl of salt and pepper squid. ****"

  •  Riverby Estate Chardonnay 2009

    • The grapes used to make this wine came from the first plantings ever made by Riverby Estate, on our Jacksons Road vineyard. The vines are now 21 years old and are always cropped very low; just 6 tonnes per hectare in 2009. The block is exclusively planted with the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay; Mendoza having long been recognised as the premium New Zealand chardonnay clone. After careful handling the wine was 100% fermented and aged in French oak. During its 11 months in oak, 25% new, it underwent regular lees stirring to produce the desired mealy characters. Half of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. It was bottled in late March 2010.

A bright medium straw in colour, the initial impression on the nose is of citrus and ripe stone-fruit, on a backdrop of butterscotch and caramel with vanilla and an almost lemon meringue character. The overall impression from the aroma is of a powerful, rich, but well balanced and elegant wine.

The attractive aromatics lead on to a palate redolent with nectarine, apricots, peaches and citrus fruits, supported by a mealy texture and toasty vanillin oak. This is an impressively powerful and yet refined wine, concentrated and rich and very appealing. The finish is exquisite and lingering with the baguetty, creamy characters leaving the impression of a very classy but powerful wine. The components promise to meld even further together and provide a wine with great aging potential.

"A most satisfying Chardonnay displaying fragrant aromas of stonefruit, cashew and citrus with nicely pitched toasty oak notes. At its best: now to 2013. 13.5% June 2011. 93/100"
