Riverby Estate Eliza Riesling 2013
Our Jacksons Road vineyard has a long history of producing stunning Rieslings, with our first Riesling vines planted in 1990. The previous vintage of this wine, which was the inaugural vintage, won numerous golds and trophies and had excellent reviews. 2013 was an exceptional vintage in Marlborough and the hand-picked fruit for this wine came into the winery in pristine condition.
Pale, aged gold in colour, this distinctive Riesling has a rich nose of florals, manuka honey, citrus, apples and ripe stone-fruit, notably peaches and nectarines. These initial nuances carry through on the palate, which is immediately appealing and moreish and keeps building in intensity with rich, spicy fruits; stone-fruits, citrus, apples honey and ginger. The acid sweetness balance is impeccable and there is a lovely minerally character running through the wine. This is a crisp, elegant, refreshing wine with loads of appeal. It lingers beautifully leaving a gentle floral, honey and fruity taste in the mouth. This wine is sure to give great pleasure as it ages gracefully and continues to improve and develop even greater depth and charm over time.

"This is outstanding. The immensely appealing and complex bouquet shows yellow peach, mango, spice and honey aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that's meltingly delicious offering elegant sweetness and rich texture, perfectly balanced by mouth-watering acidity. It's harmonious, multi-layered and extremely long on the finish. At its best: now to 2025. $27.00. ***** 96/100"

"Brilliant straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, lighter edged. The nose is initially shy, opening up to show breadth and depth, revealing aromas of yellow florals and citrus fruits melded with honey and marmalade and some subtle toasty complexities. Medium-sweet to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features rich and ripe lime fruit flavours alongside honey, toast and marmalade. This has good fruit weight and extract , the mouthfeel showing phenolic textures and presence, balanced by fresh, lively, savoury acidity. The wine flows with good energy and underlying tension, unfolding complexing exotic floral and musky botrytis detail as it carries to a very long and sustained finish. This is a rich and complex medium-sweet Riesling with layers of citrus fruit, honey and toasty detail. Serve as an aperitif and with fruit and baked desserts over the next 4-5 years. 18.5/20 ***** "

" The 2013 Eliza Riesling has a stunning nose of fresh lime juice, frangipani and white peaches with hints of fennel seed, ginger and yuzu zest. Off dry and light-bodied with a lively acid backbone, the stone fruit, citrus and floral elements fan out beautifully in the mouth, finishing with great freshness. "

"Instantly appealing, the 2013 vintage is a single-vineyard, Wairau Valley wine, hand-harvested from vines planted in 1990. Full-bodied, with abundant sweetness (40 grams/litre of residual sugar), it is light lemon/green, with generous, peachy flavours, hints of spices, pears and honey, and lovely depth and harmony. Drink now or cellar "

"Honey, apricot and stonefruit with wild yeast notes. Baked apples/fruits with crunchy acidity: spices appearing with aeration. A tinge of grapefruit keeping it fresh. This really opens up and blossoms on the nose; lots going on here. Delicious wine. Excellent "

Riverby Estate Eliza Riesling 2012
The 2012 vintage was an exceptional one for Riesling in Marlborough, so much so that we decided to make this very special wine for the first time. Our Jacksons Road vineyard has a long history of producing stunning Rieslings, with our first Riesling vines planted in 1990. In 2012 we had the magical combination of some exceptionally clean fruit and fruit with the perfect ratio of botrytis. Carefully blended together they have resulted in this exceptional wine. It was bottled on 27 March 2013.
It is a bright lemon colour and has a classical rich nose of florals, manuka honey, citrus, apples and ripe stone-fruit. As it opens up it really is a quite beguiling nose; creamy and seductive, with rose petals and crunchy, juicy, red apples, caramelised apples even, all on a background of ripe citrus, notably mandarine. These initial nuances carry through on the palate, which is immediately appealing and moreish with rich, spicy fruits; stone-fruits, citrus and apples. The acid sweetness balance is impeccable and there is a lovely minerally character running through the wine. The overall impression on the palate is of a charming, refreshing wine with loads of appeal. It lingers beautifully leaving a gentle floral, honey and fruity taste in the mouth. This wine is sure to give great pleasure as it ages gracefully and continues to improve and develop even greater depth and charm over time.

"Bright, very pale straw colour, near colourless on rim. The nose is gently full and grows in volume, showing fine lime and lemony fruit intermixed with honeysuckle talc botrytis and musk, with a fine herbal nuance. Medium in sweetness, attractive flavours of citrus, honey and yellow florals form a soft core, the palate showing presence and softly mouthfilling weight and richness. The sweetness is accessible and enhanced by bright, refreshing acidity. The phenolic backbone is softened by the lusciousness and the flavours are driven to a very long, lively finish with musk and honey notes. This is an attractively luscious medium-sweet Riesling with hints of decadence. Match with mildly spicy cuisine and fruit desserts over the next 5+ years. 18.5+/20"

" The fragrant bouquet is all honeysuckle and tangelo zest and the flavour is fresh and tasty with what seems to be moderate sweetnessness, heading towards luscious but the juicy acidity keeps that sweetness in check. With tantalising mango, sweet citrus and flower nectar it is indeed deliciously luscious as the lasting flavours linger – not surprising with 63 grams/litre of residual sugar in the wine. "

" This is impossible to dislike. It's one of the most gorgeous, delicious and engaging rieslings I've tasted in the last few years. The bouquet is ripe and fragrant showing yellow peach, orange zest, floral and a hint of flinty notes. It's luscious and expressive on the palate with outstanding focus and intensity, combined with appealing sweetness (63 g/l) and perfectly pitched acidity. The wine finishes superbly long and linear. This is the first offering of spätlese/auslese-style from Riverby Estate, and what a stunner it is. At its best: now to 2022. ***** 96/100 "

" Moderately sweet with good intensity and purity. Mineral, lime and floral characters with a lovely interplay between sweetness and taut acidity. A delicious wine that promises to get even more interesting with bottle age. ***** 95/100 "
