Riverby Gruner Veltliner
  •  Riverby Estate Gruner Veltliner 2014

    • This is our second vintage of Gruner Veltliner. It comes from our Jacksons Road vineyard in the premium grape-growing area of Marlborough. We consciously remove fruit during the ripening season so that the remaining low yielding fruit ripens perfectly and without any pressure from disease. When the time finally came for harvest in early April 2014 we were presented with fruit of exceptional quality and finesse. The fruit was all hand-picked, treated very gently throughout the whole wine-making process and handled totally in stainless steel to retain the aromatics. It was fermented quite dry to produce a very minerally, food friendly wine.

A clear, pale lemon in colour, it has enticing aromas of minerals, lemon and grapefruit citrus, lovely garden florals, nectarine and peachy stone-fruits and a spicy herbal hint. The palate follows on in this grain with very refreshing, refined, elegant flavours. There are obvious stone-fruit characters of peach and nectarine, alongside minerals and river stones, sugar snap peas and subtle herbal notes. It is a crisp wine with lovely acid balance and noticeably dry to taste. It finishes long and lingering with "Gruner's" typical white pepper closing note. This is a very elegant and refined wine, and very food friendly

      • "This is expressive, flavoursome and very attractive. A delightfully drinkable grĂ¼ner showing apricot, lemon peel, floral and subtle white pepper notes on the nose. The palate is beautifully weighted and richly textured, and finishes long and pleasingly dry. A mouth-filling wine offering abundance of character and appeal. At its best: now to 2020. www.riverbyestate.com. February 2015. ***** 93/100 "

"Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues. This has a very fresh and tightly held nose, somewhat shy, with delicate aromas of white stonefruits, white florals and minerals, with subtle herb and exotic tropical fruit suggestions. Waxy, lanolin-like elements add to the interest and detail, the nose still fresh and primary expression. Dry to taste and elegant in proportion, the flavours of white florals and stonefruits, herbs and white pepper are restrained, but form a good core with real presence, revealing richness and succulence. The palate follows a fine, textural line, gently enlivened by discreet acidity. Harmoniously balanced, the wine flows smoothly to a softly concentrated, long, lingering finish with ethereal stonefruit and floral notes. This is an elegant, fine-textured dry Gruner Veltliner with good palate presence and undeveloped flavours. It will become richer over the next 3-4 years. Match with Mediterranean and Asian fare. A very favourable vintage for the variety, second crop from the 'Riverby' vineyard. "

  •  Riverby Estate Gruner Veltliner 2013

    • This is the very first Riverby Estate Gruner Veltliner. It comes from our Jacksons Road vineyard in the premium grape-growing area of Marlborough. 2013 is already considered to be potentially one of the great Marlborough vintages. A long dry, hot summer ensured fruit ripened perfectly and without any pressure from disease. When the time finally came for harvest we were presented with fruit of exceptional quality and finesse.
Gruner Veltliner is a major grape variety in Austria and is now being explored in various parts of the world. Its aromatic qualities should see "Gruner' well suited in Marlborough. It is however a potentially high cropping variety so we took great care to crop this debut vintage very low. As a result only 128 cases were produced. The fruit was all hand-picked, it was treated very gently throughout the whole wine-making process and was handled totally in stainless steel to retain the aromatics.
A clear, pale lemon in colour, it has enticing aromas of minerals, lime, lemon, citrus, lovely garden florals, nectarine, pears and apples, and a spicy herbal hint. The palate follows on in this grain with very refreshing, refined, elegant flavours. There are obvious stone-fruit characters of peach and nectarine, alongside minerals and river stones, sugar snap peas and subtle herbal notes. It is quite a crisp wine with lovely acid balance and moderately dry to taste. It finishes beautifully long and lingering with "Gruner's typical white pepper closing note.
