Riverby Chardonnay 2009
  •  Riverby Estate Pinot Noir 2013

    • 2013 was an exceptional vintage for Pinot Noir in Marlborough and the fruit for this wine came into the winery in perfect condition. We use several different Pinot clones to add complexity; including clones 10/ 5, 114, 115, 667 and 777. The oldest of these vines are now over 20 years old. After the perfect growing season the grapes were all handpicked over several days in late March and early April, as each clone attained optimum ripeness. The yield was quite low at approximately 6 tonnes per hectare. The bunches were destemmed and the fruit was cold soaked for up to five days, before being hand plunged in open top fermenters. It spent 11 months in French oak barrels, 30% new, and was bottled in late March 2013.
A moderately deep, carmine, ruby and velvet in colour, this Pinot has enticing floral aromas, notably roses, violets and lonicera, also dark cherries, cranberries and dried herbs. It is already developing subtle but engaging savoury characters on the nose. On the palate this is a rich, complex and appealing wine with an abundance of cherries, darker fruits and savoury characters. It has lovely fine grained tannins and great acid balance giving a very clean pure feel to this deceptively powerful wine. It finishes long and lingering, very smooth with great depth and the lasting impression is of spice, clean red fruits and complex savoury hints.
This is a classical Pinot Noir from a great Marlborough vintage and it should age gracefully for many years and gain even greater complexity.

      Alcohol:13.4%, Acidity: 5.3, PH: 3.63, Residual Sugar:0 g/l.

      • "Stylish, refined and beautifully expressed, the complex bouquet shows red/dark cherry, spice and hints of cedar and truffle notes. The palate is ripe and velvety with excellent fruit concentration, brilliantly supported by fine texture and abundance of polished tannins. It's promising to evolve gracefully. At its best: now to 2020. $28.00. ***** "
        Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 2014

"Moderately deep, dark ruby-red colour, lighter on rim. This has a full and aromatic nose of fresh dark raspberry and plum fruit intermixed with liquorice and layers of dark red florals and soft herbs. The oaking is subtle and sensitive, and the nose has suggestions of pepper and a touch of reduction. Medium-bodied, rich and juicy dark raspberry flavours are entwined with spices, liquorice and herbs, and lifted by floral elements. The mouthfeel is vibrant and lively with fresh, lacy acidity and a fine tannin line in support. The palate is elegant in proportion and flows with vitality to a long spicy finish with berry fruit flavours. This is a vibrant and sweet-fruited Pinot Noir with raspberry and spicy flavours, and a finely structured palate. Match with poultry, pork and Asian fare over the next 5-6 years. "
Raymond Chan Wine Reviews March 2015

"Pale to medium ruby colored, the 2013 Pinot Noir has aromas of cranberry sauce and kirsch with hints of potpourri and chocolate. Medium-bodied, it offers an abundance of red berry flavors with nice freshness and the faintest grip of tannins."

Mid carmine red, ruby in colour, this Pinot has enticing floral aromas, notably roses, cherries and dried herbs; thyme and mint perhaps. There are spicy notes and hints of darker fruits. The richness on the nose is slightly unexpected after the subdued colour in the glass and there are already signs of savoury characters developing. On the palate this is a moderately rich and certainly enticing wine with an abundance of cherries and darker fruits. It has lovely fine grained tannins and great acid balance giving a very clean pure feel to the whole wine. It finishes long and lingering with a pleasant spiciness. • "A beautifully poised Pinot with an excellent potential. The bouquet, although youthful, is ripe and fragrant, displaying red/black cherry, game, spice and a touch of dried herb characters. It's beautifully weighted and concentrated on the palate with velvety texture and plenty of polished tannins. A superbly structured Pinot with balance and integration, and should evolve gracefully. At its best: end of 2011 to 2016. 90-93 "
        Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 2011

"Deep ruby, with fresh, ripe, cherryish aromas.  Good weight, with finely balanced oak (French, 30% new) and tannins, and excellent flavour depth. **** "
        Michael Cooper, Winestate, 2012

"Pinot noir ruby, right in the middle of the field. Bouquet sits amongst the burgundies very happily, with a similar volume of florals. The difference is the florals are lighter, more towards the buddleia and tea-rose end of the spectrum, and the fruits are more red cherry with a thought of blackboy peach. Palate is plump and juicy, richness matching the burgundies but the style of fruit lighter, no black cherry, not quite the tannin structure, blackboy analogies again, needing a year. Oaking is as subtle as the French. This is a pretty pinot noir, noticeably richer than the 2009 as if the cropping rate has been reduced, to cellar 3 – 8 + years. GK 10/11 17.5+ "
        Geoff Kelly Nov 2011

"Perfumed, spicy and silky textured, showing sweet red fruit with an earthy suggestion of undergrowth, but mellowed and charming with a fresh, lingering finish. Good Value."
Charmain Smith, Otago Daily Times, July 2012

"Low-cropped vines have helped give this wine good concentration of sweet cherry and plum flavours. Charming and attractive wine with appealing purity and length. Very good value at this price."

Crisp in the mouth, this medium bodied Pinot gives a medium level of grainy tannins and a long earthy finish. Approachable now, it should remain delicious through 2014+. 90/100 "

"Ruby red, more translucent than opaque. Savoury aromas of vanillin oak, spices and aromatic herbs. A plush wine in the mouth with smoky savoury oak, black fruits and a bittersweet red fruit undercurrent with a long lasting finish and a touch of that much sought after pinot funk. Plenty of flavoursome drinking here. 11 months in French oak, 20% new. 14% alc. $29.00. "

"Brighter carmine red colour, and the nose seems to have brighter, more zippy fruit too, along with an edge of minerality. Little charcoal and briar notes, even a touch of something floral. On the palate a lovely fruit quality: cherry and delicate raspberry notes, the fruit in this vintage balancing the firm tannins and good acidity much more equally. Refined. 89/100 "
        Tom Cannavan May 2010

"This is very much a new world style Pinot Noir. It is a saturated ruby in the glass with a garnet rim. It seems already well into its development. The nose initially throws up woodsmoke, hints of bacon and ripe red cherry. The palate invokes flavours of vibrant sweet red cherry fruit and poached yellow tamarillo. It is sweet fruited, soft, full bodied Pinot Noir displaying plenty of richness and warmth. Well priced at under $30.92."

"Great funky nose with a sprinkling of Oriental spices. Soft and fleshy in the mouth, with seamless, velvety balance between the ripe cherry fruit, oak and spicy elements. Described as a "peacock". *****
