Riverby Chardonnay 2009
  •  Riverby Estate "Sali's Block" Riesling 2011

    • One special part of our vineyard is called Sali's Block. It is now over 20 years old and it produces some of our most intensely varietal Riesling grapes. We allow this block to develop a small amount of botrytis infection to add the natural sweetness we desire for this wine. Riesling of this quality requires low yielding fruit and this block came in at only eight tonnes per hectare in the exceptional 2013 vintage. Fermentation was stopped when the wine had achieved our desired balance between sweetness and alcohol. It was bottled in mid March 2014.

Pale lemon in colour, it has intense garden flower florals; freesia and violets, also rosewater, honey and juicy red apples, plus ripe citrus characters, hints of mandarin even. It has impeccable balance and is spicy and mouth filling with lovely crisp acidity and appealing sweetness. The citrus, apples and juicy yellow stone fruit carry through on the moreish palate which also has delightful honey and herbal characters, notably basil. The long finish is crisp, elegant and refreshing with the lovely citrus nuances lingering impressively.

This is a perfectly pitched wine almost musical in its allure. It will continue to develop in the bottle and is going to provide a delightfully refreshing drink for several years.

      Alcohol: 13.1%, Acidity: 8.3, PH: 2.95, Sugars: 14 g/l.

      • "The wine offers wonderful fruit purity on the nose displaying mandarin, lime zest, floral and a hint of spice notes. It's juicy, vibrant and intensely flavoured on the palate with subtle sweetness and racy acidity, beautifully supported by fine texture and elegant weight. The wine is persistent and linear, and delivers abundance of gorgeous riesling flavours. At its best: now to 2023. ***** 94/100"

"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with light lemon hues and some depth, pale on rim. This has an elegant and shy nose with detailed aromatics, showing savoury citrus fruit aromas with yellow florals, saline minerals and toasty development notes. The aromatics grow in concentration and depth with aeration. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, subtle flavours of limes, yellow florals, savoury honeysuckle and toast are underlined by sweet and sour acidity. The acidity and a delicate phenolic line carry the wine with mineral nuances adding to the tension and energy. The mouthfeel is lively and poised, and the elegantly concentrated line carries to a long, sustained finish with savoury citrus and toasty notes. This is an elegantly restrained, off-dry Riesling with lime, honey and toasty flavours, enlivened by sweet and sour acidity. Serve as an aperitif and with Asian fare over the next 4-5 years. "

"The 2013 Sali's Block Riesling is scented of lemongrass, lime leaves, green apples and fragrant grass with a hint of elderflower. Dry, crisp and very refreshing on the light-bodied palate, it coats the palate with plenty of citrus flavor and finishes with good length. 88+/100 "

      • "Medium/dry Riesling with good tension between sweetness and acidity. Fresh, tangy wine with citru/lime and mineral characters. A hint of botrytis adds a subtle honeyed influence. "

  •  Riverby Estate "Sali's Block" Riesling 2009

    • The fruit for this wine was selected from the Sali's Block portion of our vineyard, a block which has provided us with some of our finest riesling fruit over the years. After a perfect growing season the riesling block had just a small trace of botrytis and this was just enough to give the wine its beguiling edge of natural sweetness.

Fermentation, which took place in stainless steel, was stopped part way through to retain a seductive portion of the natural sugars.

Pale lemon in colour, this medium style riesling has lovely floral aromas mingled with apples, peaches, ripe stonefruit, and citrus characters. It is refreshing, but also delicate, with a subtle mineral background, impeccable acid balance and well integrated sweetness. It is a pleasantly mouthfilling wine with complexity and richness that expands impressively in the mouth. The finish is amazingly long, elegant and very satisfying. In total a charming wine with deceptive power that promises to cellar well for several years.

      • "Beautifully refined and gently flavoured, this is another impressive offering from this excellent producer. The nose is ripe and gentle displaying lemon, mandarin and ripe apple characters. Its well fruited and focused on the palate with subtle sweetness and perfectly pitched acidity leading to a refreshing finish. At its best: now to 2015. 91/100"

"Easy drinking, medium style with satisfying depth of fresh, lively lemon, apple and lime flavours, crisp acidity and good harmony. Drink now or cellar."

"The 2009 Sali's Block Riesling is an off-dry style containing 20 grams per liter of residual sugar. It has pleasant yeasty, Golden Delicious apple aromas with some fresh pear slices and a touch of orange zest plus suggestions of chalk and white pepper. Crisp acid is offset by a notable touch of sweetness and a good concentration of stone fruit flavors going long into the finish. The palate still seems young and a little tight and it should be best 2012 to 2016. 90/100"
