Sauvignon Blanc Semillion 2013
  •  Riverby Estate Sauvignon Blanc Semillion 2013

    • This is the second vintage of this wine. It is only made when the component parts are absolutely perfect. We use our very best block of Sauvignon Blanc and selectively hand-picked bunches of Semillon; both grape varieties ripened to perfection in the near perfect 2013 growing season. Most of the Sauvignon Blanc component was fermented and handled in stainless steel throughout the winemaking process. A small portion of the Sauvignon and all of the Semillon was fermented and matured in specially selected new French oak for eight months, with regular lees stirring to give added complexity. The final composition was 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon. It is an intriguing blend of younger Sauvignon vines with 20yo Semillon vines. The wine was bottled in late March 2014.

Pale straw in colour, on the nose it exhibits lovely citrus characters, especially lemon, and traces of vanilla, almond and nougat. It is a full bodied wine, mouth filling, almost creamy, and well balanced, with lovely citrus and herbal notes that linger impressively. Hints of oregano and thyme make it particularly appealing. It is complex and elegant with an intense, long, lingering, perfectly pitched finish.

This is still a very young wine, It will gain considerable complexity as it ages. There are still many nuances to unfold over time as this exciting wine develops.

      Alcohol:12.5%, Acidity: 7.0, PH: 3.18, Residual Sugar:3.8 g/l.

      • "70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon from the 'Riverby' vineyard, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 3.8 g/L RS, the Semillon aged 8 months in new French oak prior blending. Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, pale on edge. The bouquet is fresh with firmly concentrated and intense aromas of gooseberry fruit entwined with grass, green stonefruits and spicy oak. Stalk and stem-like herbaceous elements lend refreshing, raw detail. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features a concentrated core of grassy fruit with gooseberry, stalk and herbal notes, along with spicy oak. The mouthfeel is brisk and refreshing with lively and near-racy acidity. The wine follows a soft-textured line, leading to a sustained, zesty herbal finish. This Sauvignon/Semillon blend features a concentrated grassy core and a racy, refreshing mouthfeel. Match with herb-marinated white meat dishes over the next 2+ years. 17.0/20 Apr 2015 ****"
Raymond Chan Wine Reviews April 2015

"This is precise and vibrant while offering delicate complexity from these two classic grapes (semillon, which makes up 30% of the blend, was matured in French oak). The bouquet shows lemon pith, feijoa, dill and apple notes, leading to a focused palate that's juicy and refreshing. The wine is beautifully textured and finishes impressively long and crisp. At its best: now to 2018. www.riverbyestate.com. July 2014 90/100"
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2014

"Cut grass and herbs, smoke, brambles and lemony citrus. Broad on the palate, beautifully integrated with excellent length of finish. Surprisingly complex. This blend works together very well. A food, rather than aperitif, wine. Excellent"

      • "This is a delicately structured sauvignon with semillon making up about a third of the blend. The semillon portion and a small amount of sauvignon were matured for 8 months in new French oak barrels. The bouquet is youthful and elegant, showing lemon/lime zest, floral, dill and a hint of flinty characters. It's focused and concentrated on the palate with fine texture and bright acidity. The wine is beautifully shaped and linear, making it a lovely wine to partner fresh shellfish dishes. At its best: now to 2017. $26.00. 12.5% 90/100."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2012

"Weighty wine with a great texture. The oak is evident but appropriate, adding extra interest to citrus, mineral and melon flavours. Bone dry. Interesting wine with development potential."
        Bob Campbell, July 2012

"An injection of 35% semillon, with its hay fields and herb notes, adds depth and complexity to snappy, citrus-driven sauvignon blanc.  This is the debut effort for this style from Riverby, and 8 months in new french oak has led to a lovely amalgamation of white peach, lemongrass, sugar-snap pea and herbaceousness in this wine along with nice texture and solid length of flavour.
