Our prized Riesling block is one of the oldest in Marlborough and is located in the premium grape-growing heart of Marlborough, where some of the greatest Rieslings can be found. 2017 was an interesting vintage with late season rains after a good growing season. Fortunately, because we crop low and generally ripen earlier than most, we were able to harvest all of our Riesling grapes on 30 March 2017 before the rains came. Hand-picked at less than eight tonnes per hectare so that only the very best and cleanest bunches were selected, we are very happy with our wine that “beat the rains”.  After careful handling throughout, this wine was bottled on 23 February 2018

It is pale straw in colour with fantastic aromatics as befitting a premium dry Riesling. Florals, herbs, citrus, a hint of honey and green apples, this is a rich and vibrant wine. It is delightfully crisp and dry with peaches and lovely citrus characters, including mandarin, lemon and ripe grapefruit, even a hint of Valencia oranges. On the palate it is very appealing, medium bodied and rich with great acid balance and freshness. It finishes with lingering fruitiness and intensity: the crisp lime characters increasingly obvious in a wine which initially hides its dryness with such ripe fruit characters. It promises to age gracefully and develop even greater charm for many years.

Unfolding well, the 2017 vintage is fresh and medium bodied, with strong, lemony flavours, slightly toasty, bottle-aged notes adding complexity, balanced acidity and a finely balanced, lengthy finish.  ****
